What is an eclipse?

Solar

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on a narrow strip of the planet.

Lunar

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, and Earth's shadow falls on the Moon.

Saros

Eclipses repeat in a pattern of 18 years and 11 days called the Saros cycle.
